Tesfaye Bekele
b. 1982, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Lives and works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Represented by Addis Fine Art.
Tesfaye Bekele is an Addis Ababa-based painter whose physically engaged practice produces dense, kinetic fields of intertwining lines and arcs that pulse with bodily and biological energy. He completed his BFA in Art Education (2010) and MFA in Fine Art (2016) at Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, where he continues to teach. Working with brushes attached to long sticks over canvases laid on the floor, Bekele generates sweeping gestural marks informed by a deep engagement with anatomy, physiology, and natural systems, creating compositions that evoke imagined inner cartographies.
Addis Fine Art has presented two solo exhibitions of his work: Energy Circles (Addis Ababa, 2023) and Moments of Change (Addis Ababa, 2025), the latter marking a new direction as Tesfaye began introducing fabric onto the canvas surface. His work has appeared in group exhibitions in Germany, Kenya, and Ethiopia, and has been shown internationally through Addis Fine Art.
