Tizta Berhanu

b. 1991, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Lives and works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Represented by Addis Fine Art.

Tizta Berhanu is a figurative painter whose vibrant oil canvases explore the emotional textures of human connection. Intimacy and solitude, tenderness and distance are held together in a single, unfixed gaze. Trained at Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design under artists such as Tadesse Mesfin, she builds her compositions from fluid, swirling brushstrokes and translucent layers of paint, rendering figures that emerge from fields of colour without resolving into fixed narrative. Hands, faces, and gestures anchor the viewer in scenes that remain intentionally open, creating space for emotional recognition rather than storytelling.

Addis Fine Art has presented three solo exhibitions of her work, including Agape (Addis Ababa, 2025), Synthesis of Souls (London, 2023), and ህብር (Heber) (Addis Ababa, 2021). She is a finalist for the Norval Sovereign African Art Prize (2024) and was included in When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting at Zeitz MoCAA, Cape Town (2022). Tizta’s most recent solo, Love Is A Practice, was presented by Tiwani Contemporary, London, in 2026. She is a recipient of the Toyota Tsusho CFAO African Art Award, with presentations scheduled at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Ginza Tsutaya Gallery, Tokyo; and Palais de Lomé, Togo.
