Tadesse Mesfin

b. 1953, Woldia, Ethiopia. Lives and works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Represented by Addis Fine Art.

Tadesse Mesfin is one of the most influential figures in modern and contemporary Ethiopian art, his practice inseparable from the country's visual culture over the past half century. Trained at Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design and subsequently at the Repin Academy of Arts in Leningrad (MFA, 1984), he synthesised Ethiopian iconographic traditions, Coptic linearity, and Soviet formal discipline into a deeply personal pictorial language. For over thirty years he taught at the Alle School, mentoring generations of painters who have come to define contemporary Ethiopian art, among them Merikokeb Berhanu, Tesfaye Urgessa, and Tizta Berhanu.

Tadesse is best known for his Pillars of Life series, in which the women of Ethiopia's open-air markets are rendered as elongated, column-like forms, at once architecturally monumental and emotionally intimate. His palette of ochres, terracottas, and soft greens evokes both the warmth of the Ethiopian sun and the rhythmic cadence of communal life. Addis Fine Art has presented several major exhibitions of his work, including Pillars of Life (Addis Ababa, 2018; London, 2020) and Where We Coalesce (Addis Fine Art and Vigo Gallery, London, 2024). His work has been featured in Continuity and Change: Three Generations of Ethiopian Artists at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida (2007), and In Search of Rhythm at the Alliance Ethio-Française, Addis Ababa (2014).
